Wild and Crazy Locks Part 1

The Trent Severn Waterway, which connects Lake Ontario to Lake Huron, has 44 locks.  Most of those locks are normal - you drive your boat into the lock, the doors close behind you, then the water either lifts you up or down, then the doors in front of you open and you're on your way. There are three, however, that make you think you are in an amusement park - Peterborough, Kirkfield and Big Chute.

Peterborough and Kirkfield are "lift" locks which, when entering, you drive your boat into a giant pan of water. The pan, with you and any other boats that have entered, either goes up or down on a giant piston or ram, with a counter-balancing pan going in the opposite direction. A differential in the amount of water determines which pan goes up or down.
